Christopher Luke

It has long been the orchestras practice to appoint, each December, a Music Director for a year, for the year following the immediately coming year. This gives continuity and certainty for the orchestra and the director for the year ahead while also allowing for regular review. We are delighted to announce that Christopher Luke has accepted the position of Music Director of TSO for 2023 and 2024. In December this year, we will consider the appointment for 2025. Christopher is well known to the orchestra having conducted rehearsals and concerts when Adam resided in Blenheim 20122013. Many of the orchestra have played with him as Ars Antiqua Chamber Orchestra when accompanying Ars Nova Choir and also in the pit orchestra for NPOS productions Phantom of the Opera, Mary Poppins, Wicked and Matilda, for which he was Musical Director. Christopher has a background as an Australian Army musician, organist and educator. He came to New Plymouth in 2012 to take up the role of Director of Music to Taranaki Community & Cathedral, and Executive Officer to the Music Innovation Trust of Taranaki (MITT). He is Music Director of Ars Nova Choir and the Great Taranaki Steam Band, as well as Chair of the Taranaki Youth Orchestra and the Taranaki Regional Chair of the New Zealand Choral Federation.
